WHITE OUT 2008

I flew home to PA this weekend for WHITE OUT 2008. After plane delays I finally made it Saturday around noon. I was supposed to get in Friday evening so I could stop by and visit by Mom's parents in Holidaysburg on Saturday morning but that didn't happen. So Brandon and I drove straight up to State College. We hit the campus, grabbed some PSU swag, and ate a breakfast dinner at Ye Old College Diner...

...and you can't go to the diner and not get a grilled sticky

So...on to the game. In case you don't know...WHITE OUT...or any "color" out was started by the Penn State student section and then moved stadium wide and then nation wide as almost every school now has a "color" out. So, against Ilinois the eighth largest crowd at Beaver Stadium (109, 626) joined together in WHITE. It was a night game so the all white looked even more amazing.

The slight rain didn't stop us beating the Illinois to go 5-0 and end up #6 in the BCS Poll. Here's a video I found of the stadium singing in the rain to CCR.

And yes, ESPN ranked PSU the best student section in college football!

I had to fly back to TN Sunday evening so I was barely in PA 24 hours, but that was enough time to get some love from Texas and Tenne.

Oh yeah...I thought this was funny...

Albums In Rotation

Here are the albums that have been dominating my iTunes recently. I must be honest and say that right now Metallica and The Subways will most likely be my #1 and #2 albums of 2008 and Kings Of Leon will be in Top 10 as well. Go listen to one...or two...or three...especially The Subways.

Soccer and Country Music

So the past 2 weeks have been fun. I got some killer hang time with a lot of my bros. Tobin, Phil and I crashed TMac’s hot tub/pool which brought on a surprise “kamakazi pool jump” visit from Mr. Christopher Stevens. The next day a whole grip of us (Eddy, Jeff, Tobin, Phil, Damien, and Chris) got together at Woody’s Smokes & Brews for just that...smokes and brews. It’s this kind of “bro” fellowship that I have enjoyed the most this past year and a half. I never really had it before other than with just the guys I worked with and this kind of eclectic and diverse fellowship brings up some of the best and most enjoyable conversations about God, women, music, and at that time beer and smokes. Later in the week some more of us (Toby, Chad, Phil, Tobin, and Ryan) got together for an amazing dinner at the Red Pony followed by some more hot tub/pool time at TMac’s. On that Saturday I went to a kids soccer game to see Cade Boer’s team play Owen Jackson’s team. It was a lot of fun watching these guys run around. I feel blessed to have and ofcourse their parents in my life. Here are some pics.

Sara got back from her cruise ok (despite some very rough water on the day Ike hit) and she came with me to Grace Center. It had been a while since I was there due to trips and a football game so it felt great. It seems that every time you bring a “visitor” to a church for the first time something out of the ordinary happens. But not this time. So I was glad she could see the church I have been attending the past year and experience the worship led by Chris.

Nashville was hit with a massive gas shortage partially due to Ike the week before and really people just panicking. So on Friday 85% of the gas stations in the Nashville/Brentwood/Franklin area were out of gas. Those that had it had crazy long lines and limits were put on how much gas you could purchase. It was like something out of Mad Max. It’s really unsettling how easy to shake or crack the system we depend on so much when it wasn’t even completely knocked out. It definitely made you think.

I have been in Nashville 8 years and have never been to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Well, all of that changed on Saturday. My friend Matt Miller (formerly of The Evan Anthem) moved here a few months ago and took a job as a host at the So Bro Grill, the restuarant inside the Hall of Fame. Sara and I met up with him there for an amazing lunch...seriously...amazing. If you live in Nashville and work downtown you need to hit this place up. And since Matt worked there we got to tour the Country Music Hall of Fame for free. It was awesome. The Williams Family exhibit was extremely informative and it was great to learn so much about a genre I never fell in love with till I moved to Nashville. But don’t peg me for a fan of today’s country...I’m old school (Cash, Willie, Hank, Merle, and Waylon).

Florida and Football

Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve updated this thing. And like I’ve said before, it seems a lot easier to update my Twitter account. But anyways, here’s the quick 411 of what’s been going on.

My dad had a business trip lay over on Thursday 8/21 so we grabbed dinner and had some killer conversation time. It was great to see him. I went to another Sounds game with Sara and some kids she watches. Again, the fireworks were awesome. The next day we took a trip to Murfreesboro and met up with Tobin to see Abandon Kansas play. They definitely impressed me and though I don’t think their album matches up with the energy they have live, I look forward to keeping any eye on them.
I got see the mighty Stone Temple Pilots for the first time when they rocked out the Grand Ole Opry on 8/24. It was amazing. I was just glad Weiland showed up. He is by far one of the best modern day frontmen you will ever see. I felt like I was transported back to 1994 when they opened up with “Big Empty”. It was a kick ass show.

I went to yet another Sounds game with Sara, Derek, and Danny but this time it was Thirsty Thursday (ie, $1 beer). The tickets were free and the beer was cheap so obviously you can’t turn down entertainment like that plus the people watching is great.

I took a trip Labor Day weekend with my bros Phil and Tobin to St. Augustine, FL. It was the first time I could remember I took a “guys” trip. We stayed on a boat called the Flip Side (owned by the former drummer of Creed and now Alter Bridge) and lived it up large for 4 nights / 3 days. We probably drank way too many Goombay Smashes on Reggae Sunday at the Conch House. But the drinks were free and the hang time was killer. It was a very historic town and a very chill environment. Their tourist slogan was “A quaint little fishing village with a huge drinking problem”. Thanks to Richard, Roli, the McClelland family, and the rest of the SSB guys for the hospitality and great times. I had never been to St. Augustine before and always wanted to go, so I’m really glad I did and that I made a trip with some good dudes who have become great friends this past year. Here are some pics.

Once I got back to TN Sara and I grabbed dinner with the Boer family. Debb sure does know how to cook a killer meal and not just cause I hadn’t had a home cooked meal in a while. Then on the weekend Sara and I had dinner with Beth and Devan at City House in the Germantown area of Nashville. It was my first time eating there and I freakin’ loved it. We followed that up by hittin’ up 3 Crow for Emmy’s and Derek’s birthdays. A lot of friends came out and it was great time seeing everyone and catching up.

I went to my first Tennessee Titans game yesterday. My bro JR had free tickets and I of course took the opportunity to go. I have never been to a pro football game before and it was killer to go to game 1. Not only did the Titans pull out a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars but Penn State alumni quarterback Kerry Collins came in and drove the team down the field for the game clinching touchdown win. As one of my favorite ESPN commentators says, “He was as cool as the other side of the pillow”.

Penn State football has started and so far we’re 2-0. I think we’ll have a really good season and I can’t wait to go home to PA at the end of the month for the Illinois game which is also the WHITE OUT game. And in case you don’t know what that is then click HERE.

Anyways, that’s the latest.
